Aizawl, the State capital of Mizoram is situated at a height of 4000 ft. above sea level. It is surrounded on the east by Tuiral River, on the north by the Durtlang hills and on the west by the Tlawng River. As per the 2001 Census (Provisional), the population of Aizawl is 2,29,714.
The town is a political, cultural and religious centre of the Mizos. The majority of people living in Aizawl are Christians and for that matter Sunday is an important day for them.
Roads and shopping areas wear an empty look on this day and the only sound that one could hear are the chimes of the church bells in the morning and evening. The nearest airport is at Lengpui, 43 km away from the town and Silchar, in Assam is the nearest railhead. |

AIR: Aizawl is connected with Kolkatta and Imphal by Alliance Air and the nearest airport is at Lengpui, 43 km from Aizawl. Indian Airlines operates daily (except Sunday) flight service to Silchar Airport in Assam, which is approximately 180 km from Aizawl. |
RAIL:Nearest railhead is Silchar in Assam, 180 km away. It takes about six hours to eight hours to travel by bus and light vehicles respectively. However, Guwahati Rail station is highly recommended as it is well connected by train with all major cities and towns in the country. From Guwahati, tourists can travel by bus or Sumo jeeps via Shillong and Silchar. Daily deluxe bus services are also available between Aizawl and Shillong/Guwahati via Silchar. |

Bara Bazaar: This is the main shopping centre where people are best seen in their traditional costumes selling produce from farms and homesteads including river crabs.
Luangmual Handicrafts Centre: At a distance of about seven km, this Centre provides visitors an interesting insight into the Mizo's handicrafts items. The 'Khumbeu', the Ceremonial bamboo hat is made here using waterproof 'Hnahthial' leaves.
Mizoram State Museum: Situated at McDonald Hill in the town centre, the museum has an interesting collection of historical relics, ancient costumes and traditional implements. Timings: Monday - Friday: 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m, Saturday: 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. |
